From the archives: My favourite fashion reads

Sunday 5 April 2020

I was sat here flicking through last month's Vogue (how amazing was that Jodie Comer interview?) when it randomly occurred to me that I wrote up a piece a little while ago about all about my fave fashion reads, that, for some reason, I had failed to post on here.

So, if fashion and reading are your kinda thing then you're in luck... From high fashion to fiction, style guides to memoirs, here's a list of all my favourite fashion-focused reads that not only look amazing on your bookshelf, but are impossible to put down.

The Fashion Book

Described as the "textbook" of fashion, if you're looking to clue up on over two-hundred years worth of fashion history, then The Fashion Book will be for you. From designers, runways and revolutionary celebrity looks (think the Gaga meat dress) this book has it all.

The New Fashion Rules

Fashion blogger and YouTuber, Victoria Magrath (Inthefrow), offers a fresh look at navigating the contemporary fashion world in a digital era. This little gem is bursting with tips, inspiration and pivotal fashion moments spanning everything from ethical fashion to diversity in an often painfully exclusive industry.

Women in Clothes: Why We Wear What We Wear

The likes of Lena Dunham, Molly Ringwald, Tavi Gevinson and Cindy Sherman, joined by over 600 others, are interviewed about how fashion is tied to politics, our relationships and our lives in this thought-provoking page-turner. The three editors behind Women in Clothes offer an insightful look at our wardrobes and the complexities of the seemingly mundane act of getting dressed.

My Paris Dream

Ever wanted to know what it takes to become a fashion journalist? Then My Paris Dream is definitely for you. Former Vogue and Harper's Bazaar editor Kate Betts pens this coming-of-age memoir about making it as a fashion journalist in the '80s - bringing the legendary Parisian fashion scene to life.

How To Be Parisian: Wherever You Are

Those wanting to emulate the iconic French style that so many long for should look no further than this novel. How To Be Parisian promises to provide tips and inspiration through delightful illustrations and light-hearted anecdotes, right at your fingertips. Anne Berest, Caroline De Maigret, Audrey Diwan and Sophie Mas show how anyone can inject a bit of Paris into their lives.

Alexander McQueen

While there's a long list of designer-specific novella out there, none are quite like this. Claire Wilcox, curator of the exhibition Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, takes you into the mind of one of Britain's most daring and revolutionary designers, Alexander McQueen. Featuring striking imagery, unseen collections and catwalk shows, as well as essays from leading fashion commentators, this book chronicles the breath-taking life and works of the late designer.

The Devil Wears Prada

It goes without saying that we all remember the iconic trio (Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway) that graced our screens in the film adaptation, but The Devil Wears Prada is also a staple on any fashion mogul's bookshelf. The first in the best-selling series, this comedic-fiction novel gives a behind-the-scenes look at working at a fashion magazine with a less-than-friendly boss. So, if you loved the movie... read the book!

Love Style Life

Beloved by the fashion community, Garance Doré, founder of the eponymous, influential fashion blog, curates a charming and candid memoir meets style-guide. This delightfully addictive novel does exactly what it says on the tin - featuring stories on love, style and life from a fashion figure-head.

I really hope you enjoyed reading! I thought, given the fact that we all have a bit of time on our hands right now, that it would be no better time than to share some books to bury your head in. I'll probably do this kind of thing again, but with a different genre.

Please do let me know if you have any suggestions of your own, I always love to hear them!
